Students applying to college this year will have an easier time in a few important ways.

This year marks the first year that the Common Application will not by default ask students about their criminal history. Member institutions will still be able to ask students this question if they choose, just as they are able to ask other supplemental questions, but it will no longer be asked and included by default. One of the smallest but most useful changes is clearer character limits for activity descriptions. Most students have no idea that they have 150 characters to describe each activity, and either end up writing too-short descriptions or getting cut off unexpectedly.
