A historic fire station in downtown York is getting a major upgrade Rex Laurel Fire Station 1 will undergo a nine-month, $3 million restoration.Fire Chief William Sleeger says everything is getting redone The building at Duke and King streets in York is nearly 150 years old.Sleeger says many of the window frames are deteriorating and can't be fixed.
The chief says the upgrade will include the floor, the steps, all the wood and all the electrical. It will also get fire sprinklersThe fire station one dates back to 1877. It is one of the oldest active fire stations in the country, according to Sleeger. While the work is being completed, shift supervisors will be based at the Eagle Fire Station near York College. It was closed in 1991 due to budget cuts, but it has re-opened.
