Obama to recognize Newark as national ‘model’ for violence reduction

Newark will be named one of four 'model communities' for achieving one of six goals of the My Brother's Keeper Alliance created by the former president

on Wednesday when the nation’s 44th president recognizes the city’s success in reducing violence with an $800,000 grant to continue that work., created by then-President Obama in 2014 and now run by the Obama Foundation, will recognize Newark as a “model community” to serve as an example for communities nationwide.

More than 200 cities nationwide have chapters of the alliance, including Newark, which Baraka formed in 2014, his first year in office. “Newark is eager to share our success in reducing violence with other communities,” Baraka added, “and we look forward to learning from other communities who have achieved other key milestones.”Executive Director Mark Comesanas and CEO Rob Clark of the Newark Opportunity Youth Network, an affiliated group, will also attend the Chicago MBK gathering, which will encourage networking and sharing ideas and methods for achieving all six milestones.

Adren Wilson, the alliance’s national executive director, said Newark was one of four model cities being recognized this year during a 1 p.m. ceremony at Chicago’s Venue Space Six 10 along with Yonkers, New York; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska.
