Singaporean tourists have set a new record for visiting Japan, with over 691,000 travelers in 2024, a significant jump from the previous year. A combination of factors, including a favorable exchange rate, increased flight options, and promotions focusing on lesser-known regions, contributed to this surge. The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) plans to continue promoting regional travel while managing overtourism concerns. The upcoming World Expo in Osaka is expected to further boost Japan's popularity as a travel destination.
Visitors from Singapore to Japan surged by 16.9 percent from 2023, reaching a record-breaking 691,100 in 2024. This significant increase reflects the enduring allure of Japan as a travel destination for Singaporeans. According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) Singapore Office, December 2024 witnessed a particularly notable surge in visitors, with a 19.8 percent year-on-year increase.
A total of 136,200 Singaporean visitors were recorded in December, accounting for nearly 20 percent (19.7 percent) of the year's total travel. The JNTO attributes this remarkable growth to several factors, including a stronger Singapore Dollar against the Japanese Yen, making Japan more affordable and attractive for travelers. Increased seat availability between the two countries, enhanced promotional activities, and a focus on promoting lesser-known regional destinations in Japan also played a role. Takuya Shiraishi, executive director of the JNTO Singapore Office, expressed optimism about continued growth, stating that the JNTO will prioritize promoting travel to Japan's regional areas while mitigating overtourism concerns.Shiraishi also highlighted the upcoming World Expo in Osaka, scheduled to take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025. This global event, featuring exhibitions, cultural performances, and international dialogues, is expected to attract millions of visitors and further elevate Japan's profile on the world stage. Concurrently, the Japan Tourism Agency has launched an initiative titled 'Travel etiquette for the future' to encourage responsible travel practices among visitors. The guide promotes respectful behavior, including obtaining permission before taking photographs, proper waste disposal, and refraining from bringing luggage into crowded areas. 'As a courteous and considerate traveler, your good manners help protect and preserve the destinations you visit while enriching your own travels,' the guide emphasizes
