Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, is making a major shift in its AI strategy by open-sourcing its next-generation model, Ernie, starting June 30th. This move comes amidst increasing competition in the AI sector and the success of open-source alternatives like DeepSeek. Baidu , the Chinese search engine giant, announced on Friday, February 14th, that it will make its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, Ernie , open-source starting June 30th. This marks a significant shift in strategy for Baidu as competition in the AI sector intensifies. Previously, Baidu CEO Robin Li had been a strong advocate for closed-source AI models, believing them to be the only viable path for development.
However, the emergence of DeepSeek, a startup offering open-source AI services with performance comparable to OpenAI's advanced systems at a lower operational cost, has challenged this stance. Baidu is also aiming to boost its market share by making its AI chatbot, Ernie Bot, free starting April 1st. This move comes roughly a year and a half after the introduction of premium versions of Ernie Bot, following the debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. While Baidu claims its current Ernie large language model, Ernie 4.0, matches OpenAI's GPT-4 capabilities, it has struggled to gain widespread adoption compared to competitors. In China, ByteDance's Doubao chatbot leads with 78.6 million monthly active users, followed by DeepSeek with 33.7 million and Ernie Bot with 13 million, according to January data from AI product tracker Aicpb.com.'We will gradually launch the Ernie 4.5 series in the coming months and officially open-source it from June 30th,' Baidu stated in a WeChat post. Li's apparent change of heart on open-source development was evident during an event in Dubai this week. He expressed his belief that open-sourcing could accelerate AI adoption by encouraging widespread experimentation and ultimately spreading the technology more rapidly. Furthermore, Baidu is planning to launch a new next-generation model, Ernie 5, in the second half of 2025, according to a source familiar with the matter.
